The Old Castlemaine Gaol was purchased by private developers in 2012 from Mt. Alexander Shire Council with the view of developing the heritage listed building into a restaurant, bar, function space and community space to highlight local produce and educational and cultural events.

Built in 1861 to house offenders from the goldfields and nearby towns, it served various functions in the penal system before it was closed down and its prisoners transferred to HM Prison Loddon in 1990.

Since then it has been repurposed for a number of uses including backpackers accomodation, function centre, housing a local radio station, a hospitality training facility, and a venue for local schools chess tournaments.
